Italy beats Belgium in four sets

Innsbruck, Austria, September 10, 2011 – In Saturday’s second game in Innsbruck, Italia won against Belgium 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-15). Italia is now leading Pool C of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship duo to a better points ration compared to France. Belgium couldn’t take advantage of the win of the first set.

Like in Saturday’s first match in Innsbruck, the team that had won the first lost the match. It took some time till Italy found a recipe against Belgium’s high-speed offense, led by setter Captain Frank Depestele. Also Italy’s service wasn’t as efficient as in the end of the match. Belgium used his chances and won the opening set 25-22.

In the second set Italy achieved to decrease Belgium’s reception percentage dramatically and created good opportunities for blocking. Seven kill blocks by Italy in the second set were the result – the “Squadra Azzurra“ took that second set quite easily.

The most important set was for sure that third. Belgium almost led the whole

Serbia celebrates dominates against Turkey

Serbia celebrates dominates against Turkey

Serbia punctuated it’s rank as one of the favorites to win the 2011 CEV European Championship for Men on Saturday as it celebrated an impressive 3:0 (25:16, 25:18, 25:20)-win in 72 minutes against Turkey.

The Bronze medal winner of the FIVB World Championships 2010 dominated the game right from the start puzzling the Turkish team with an array of different effective variations in their attack. On the other hand the Serbian defense frustrated their opponents when they erased numerous offensive efforts.

Ivan Miljkovic, who had 19 points to lead all scorers, headed a strong team effort, that never allowed any doubts who would win this game. He was supported by Nikola Kovacevic and Dragan Stankovic who chipped in 10 points each. Burutay Subasi was Turkey’s top scorer with 9 points, while Serhat Coskun added eight.

While the presence of Miljkovic was always felt, Turkey struggled to find a rhythm all the way. When the Serbian top scorer was subbed out at the end of the third set, Turkey

Record crowd sees Slovenia down Austria

Record crowd sees Slovenia down Austria

The sensation the co-host of the EuroVolley hoped for didn’t happen. Austria suffered a 0:3 (20:25, 21:25, 20:25) defeat against the favored Slovenians in front of a record-braking crowd of nearly 6.000 spectators after 81 minutes. The Austrian national team never played for a bigger audience.

The Austrian Starting Line-Up consisted of Ichovski, Binder, Schneider, Gavan, Guttmann and Libero Laure. At the beginning the third-placed team in this year’s European League took control. Austria had problems with receiving the ball, so head coach Michael Warm subbed in Frühbauer for Guttmann at the score of 5:11. But its was a little to late, as Slovenia didn’t falter and won the first set after 26 minutes 25:20.

The second set went in a similar direction after the favorites had a quick-start to a 8:3-lead at the first technical time-out. Thomas Zass led his team back in the game with a series of good services and suddenly Austria was up 11:9. Now the spectators went crazy for the first time,

France wins opening match in Pool C

Innsbruck, Austria, September 10, 2011 – After a hard fight, France celebrated a 3-1 victory (25-14, 17-25, 31-29, 28:26) against Finland in the first game of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Men. Both teams showed impressive actions following a nervous start in the match.

Finland started warm-up almost 20 minutes after France. It took them the same time, til they found their rhythm in the game. France served amazingly, scored four points in the opening set, and won the set easily (25-14). In the second set the momentum changed sides and Finland fought back. Pushed by the Finnish supporters, who were the majority of fans in the “Olympiahalle Innsbruck”, “Suomi” achieved an increase of their passing quality and showed perfect blocking skills (8 kill blocks in 2nd set).

The third set was some kind of “restart” of the match. From this moment on, both teams performed on almost equal level. No surprise that in the following two sets, the teams were just seperated by two poin

Vladimir Alekno - Head Coach – Russia                                                  during the first training in the KV Arena Hall

My first impressions from Karlovy Vary? One splendour. A gorgeous city, the people very friendly. And surprisingly many Russian citizens among  them. But no surprise. When travelling abroad I have been founding Russians all over the world. A great nation, you know.

How am I founding the KV Arena? Very  pretty. Of course, it has been constructed mainly for ice- hockey. You recognize it mainly upon the particular character of illumination. Lighting is pointed at the lower part of the space. But never mind. We are used to it, like at home we play in many time a very similar setting and conditions .We are very satisfied  here.

My expectations concerning the championship? An attractive game, many tough matches.
