Safeguarding the European Championship

Safeguarding the European Championship

When entering the venue through the ticket points, you meet them. When searching for the correct seat, you ask them for assistance.

These are professional bodyguards who watch over the 2011 EuroVolley in Karlovy Vary and on the other venues. In the KV Arena, thirty men dressed in yellow vests work from 1 pm to 9 pm.

Vladimir Hudec, operation manager of the safeguarding agency who has been in business for 15 years, says: “This is the first time we have been safeguarding a top volleyball event. Last year we were here for the Women´s Basketball World Championship. And we are regularly ordered for the Czech extra-league matches in ice-hockey.”

And fans? Are they different?
“Of course, ice-hockey fans are more energetic and spontaneous. They form groups and they are usually local. As for volleyball fans and ball games in general, the fans obviously understand the game very well. Their professional and educational backround is slightly different. They are friendly and well-behaved. Lu

Finland beat Slovenia 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12) in 128 minutes in Wednesday’s last quarter final. Both teams underwent a lot of ups and downs but offered spectacular plays to the fans.

The most obvious statistical difference between Finland and Slovenia in the first set was the number of mistakes. Both teams scored 15 points, but Slowenia comitted 7 more errors (10)  than Finland (3). In terms of playing, Finland’s defense showed an amazing performance and was able to drive Slovenia’s attackers to desperation. This development led to Finland’s win in the first set (25-18).

Starting from the second set, Slovenia adapted to Finland’s level in defense. Therefor the „Suomi’s“ side-out lost stability and Slovenia clearly pulled away (16-10). After Andrej Flajs had to shortly leave the court duo to an injury (Flajs was able to return), Slovenia

France eliminates Turkey in Vienna’s first Playoff match

France eliminates Turkey in Vienna’s first Playoff match

Almost two sets France looked like the sure winner of Wednesday’s first Playoff Match in Vienna. With the back to the wall, Turkey came up and tried to recover from a 0-2 deficit. France kept their nerves and won 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21).

Business as usual for the „Bleus“ in the first set. Despite playing their first set in the „Wiener Stadthalle“ after having moved to Vienna from Innsbruck, France started amazingly again (8-2, 14-9). Like the matches before, Philipp Blain’s team brought themselves in troubles only  in the middle of the set, when Turkey achieved a 5:0 mini-break (15-16). Turkey even had the chance to turn the set (18-19). Especially France’s topscorer Earvin Ngapeth (21) seemed to have an objection against Turkey’s intention (25-19).

As the second set had started, Turkey eventually displayed the necessary aggressiveness for a Playoff match and suddenly played on France’s level (16-14). During the crucial phase of the set, France was able to accelerate the pace an

Poland Send Czech Players Home

Poland Send Czech Players Home

In the second play-off match the Czech team encountered the 2009 European champions – the Poland, defending their title from Turkey. The Czech Republic surpassed that time´s result (16th place in the pool) and played up to the spectators´ expectations the role of a difficult opponent.

The first set reflected an even game in all the basic skills allowing for no mistakes. In the lead as far as 11-11, the Czechs applied quality serves performed by Peter Platenik and varying side and diagonal spikes. Then, a row of even scores followed at 14-14, 16-16, 18-18 and 20-20. Poland then gathered their hitters and used out Czech unforced mistakes on the block and in the field to fix the score to 21-24. Although the hosts summoned all the strength and averted 3 setballs, they did not withstand the fourth one and the final score was 23-25.

Czech players left out space for Polish hitters to reach the score 0-5. Both sides of the court in the thrilling match showed equilibristics in the back court

Bulgaria – first to qualify in the Czech play-off

Bulgaria – first to qualify in the Czech play-off
The best two teams of Pool B KV and pool D Prague came together in Karlovy Vary. The play-off matches were opened up by Bulgaria and Estonia. The favored Bulgaria sent Estonia home and will play Russia on Thursday.

Bulgarians, considered to be the favorites, claimed the first set 25-20. They marched into the match with a clear lead thanks to properly working serves, well-organized defense and effective hits. At 13-12 Aleksiev came to the serve and scored six points in a row for Bulgaria. Estonian coach wisely took two time-outs to mobilize his players who returned to the game applying the previously proven hitters Oliver Venno and Ardo Kreek. Nervous ending saw the KV Arena with a number of serves out on both sides.

The second set score sheet showed an identical Bulgarian lead from the very beginning. The best volleyball copy machine would not produce better serves by Kazyiski than he did with his two aces. Estonians as if poured over with some magic water sent Venno with his
